Lots of smokers wish they could quit and hate that they have the habit. It's an addiction that is hard to shake. I see no hypocrisy at all.

For the same reasons most of us started smoking, peer pressure. It seemed like the cool thing to do. It is difficult to quit. Having been a smoker has nothing to do with policy.

Hey, he quit.I guess you're not young enough to remember when the Tobacco companies supported and sponsored all the sporting events, gave tons of money to people, and promoted all kinds of ADVERTISEMENTS on TV about how COOL it was to smoke.Just look back at any of the 50s movies where EVERYONE was sucking on a cigarette and you can see why everyone was hooked. In fact they PROMOTED it as being GOOD for your HEALTH!! Calmed your nerves etc.Quitting smoking is supposed to be harder than quitting HEROINE. I can tell you that they probably are not KIDDING. It's pure hell. And I'm a reformed smoker too and yes, I was sucked in by the Virginia Slim commercials of how glamourous women looked with a long cigarette holder in hand!I don't know why people criticize him for smoking when Palins kids booze up, who knows what other mind altering things they do, and screw their little brains out, and that's fine and dandy.Bristol looks like she wishes someone would put her out of her misery having to tag along on mommy dearest's campaign.I hope someone is keeping an eye on that girl.

Its almost as bad as doing coke and being an alcoholic. Which president was it that had those problems?

I understand he would be hypocrite if he would vote FOR tobacco companies and claim he detests them.Ppl can be addicted to smoking and know it's wrong! But talking about hypocrisy, I think what Mccain did was much worse. he said how 700 Billion bailout is atrocity, and then to show his further disgust voted for it!

Obama made a pledge to his wife before he started his campaign for President that he would quit smoking. He fulfilled his vow and has not smoked for 2 years. Old news. By the way, McCain also quit his two-pack a day habit years ago. Nice try at a smear...

I have been smoking, and attempting to quit smoking, since I had my first cigerette in 1984.It is not easy to stay stopped...nicotine is addicting! If I were in congress I would vote against the tobacco industry, too.

Like millions o people world wide Obama became addicted to cigarettes. I think based on the facts revealed about the tobacco companies producing and selling cigarettes that were (are) manufactured to be as addictive as possible he has good reason to vote against tobacco companies. The tobacco companies had a deliberate program to sell the most addictive product they could get on the market. If you were addicted to tobacco what would your attitude be towards the supplier? I have known recovering heroin addicts who still can't beat nicotine! Do you think his smoking an occasional cigarette will make him less qualified to be President!

You can make a personal decision to smoke and still be opposed to cigarette companies peddling their products to young children. It's not hypocrisy, it's acting like a responsible adult. Personally, I'd love to see more politicians stand up and take action for the good of the American people instead of the good of the corporations buying their votes through lobbyists and bribes.
