To tell the truth none of the electric cigarettes generates smoke. What you see is water-steam. Most of the manufacturers design their product to release steam mostly when you breath out to get the classic feeling that you are smoking.

Some other manufacturers do not design their product to release any kind of smoke or steam. Mostly because for example in public places many people could think that you are actually smoking and they gonna' rise against you that you killing them as they think they see smoke and you will not be able to explain tham that this is actually only steam. So with e-cigs that do not release any kind of smoke you are free to smoke even in crowded places without the risk to anger layman people.

Technically it's all about the design. Both liquid and non-liquid cartridges could produce "smoke" if the battery part is designed for that. The mean technology I cannot help you cuz' it's the actual producers business secret! Smiley

E-cigarettes have 2 or 3 main pieces.
A 3 piece design has a battery, an atomizer and a cartridge.
A 2 piece design has a battery & a cartomizer (the atomizer is inside the cartridge).

The battery heats up the atomizer, the atomizer heats up the e-liquid that produces vapor ("smoke").

You can purchase e-cigarettes with nicotine (the nicotine is in the e-liquid) or without nicotine.

chooseyourecig.com does a pretty good job of breaking down the operations of an electronic cigarette. They even have pictures with little arrows explaining what each piece of each part does. Might be more information than you are looking for, but if you really want to know how they actually work, check it out.

This is prob the best way to explain it
